Nonfiction writing is more exciting to read than fiction

In your opinion, which type of writing is more exciting, nonfiction (based on real-life stories) or fiction (created in the author's head).  Why do you like one type of writing over the over?  Please give an example of a piece of writing that you have enjoyed and identify it as nonfiction or fiction.  Give specific examples from the text, these do not need to be quotes!, that express why you enjoyed the reading or could connect to it.

i prefer to read fiction because i would hate having to sit there and read a book of all facts i would rather read something that isnt true because it would be more interesting. fiction can be anything you want pritty much cause its not real so u could just find a book that will make u actually want to read on intsead of just reading a book on facts that most people already know

I disagree. Non - fiction is not as interesting a fiction. Non Fiction is just facts in history, some of it may be interesting. But if you look at fiction, everything is interesting about it. Unimaginable things can happen

well honestly, i don't like reading in general. If i had to, I would rather have a fiction, but based on a true story. I think that sometimes nonfiction can be extremely boring, and i lose interest very fast. Fiction, sometimes can get carried away. For example, like when aliens and monsters come into the story, it just makes it flat out stupid. Like a story is better if it could be a real situation, but you rarely ever hear about it. I think it just depends on the story itself. Like, if there was a nonfiction story on a murder case in CT, that would be more interesting then a monster in a closet. However, if there was a nonfiction story on a writer's new book, against a fiction where some one gets kidnapped. I'm neutral in this situation, but I think fiction most of the time is a better thing to read.

Side: No, I prefer fiction

I prefer non fiction because I like to know about stories that actually happened. I think that real stories are interesting and sometimes even sad, and those kind of stories are my favorite. That is why i prefer non fiction.

One non fiction story that i enjoy is Titanic. The reason why I like this story is because it actually happened and it was a heartwarming love story.

I defiantly agree with Chelsea her argument is very supportive

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I agree with Chelsea. Nonfiction is better then fiction because fiction is made up and nonfiction is about true stories that have a lot of emotions thrown into it. My favorite nonfiction book is, "A Child Called It".

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
3 points

I like nonfiction better the fiction because fiction is about books or short stories that are meaningless in a way. Nonfiction is about a story that has actually happened and it is filled with emotions. Weather the emotion is sad, happy, or angry, it is still a good story. One of my favorite nonfiction books is, "A Child Called It". It is a sad story about a little boy who was abused his whole life. His mother made him eat poison and do a lot of things you would think no one could ever do to their own child. I read almost the whole series and it made me so mad at the mother. She called him it and she basically didn't care about him but put on a 'mask' when someone asked about him.

I agree with Katy because she makes a good point in her opinion, because "A child called it" is good proof. (: <3

i agree with you because i child called it pulled me right into the story and i felt really bad for Dave because his mom abused him and never spent time with him and they pull you right into the story which a lot of people like.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

i prefer nonfiction because i like to learn and nonfiction is real so what happened, happened in real life and can help you in life unlike fiction that isn't real people could try being like someone in a fiction book they could mess up a lot and not go back but like nonfiction it actually happened.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
3 points

I would prefer to read nonfiction. When reading nonfiction you can learn new things, and in the future you can relate them to your life. When you read fiction it could teach you something, but you can't really realistically connect to it, because it isn't real. Fiction isn't as educational, that's why i like nonfiction.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
3 points

i prefer nonfiction because it is easier to write about and it has some sort of order to it unlike fiction

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
3 points

I prefer nonfiction because it gives me the chance to read about stories and event that had occurred before I was alive. The other stories I prefer are the ones where you can relate to like within real life situations and sometimes it will give the reader a chance to see what is going on around them. It makes you think about things differently than how you already are thinking. Also when I'm reading something I prefer for the text to be real rather than made up or pretend.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I think a nonfiction book would be better than a fiction book because i would rather hear about a real story than a fake story because knowing that its real makes me more interested than a fiction book.

"My Sisters Keeper"

I absolutely agree with Paige 100% because i feel the exact same way. And the story that she chose was a great one.

I think nonfiction is better, because its true and it is stuff that really happened in the past, its not that i dont like fiction, cuz i do, because you can be creative as you want, but i just personally find nonfiction better and more interesting. An example would be what we just watched, the perfect storm, i enjoyed that much more then most things fiction.

i believe that fiction grabs the readers attention more than nonfiction because with nonfiction you have to stick to the facts

but with fiction you have more freedom and chances to grab the attention of the reader

Side: No, I prefer fiction

I prefer Non-Fiction because i think that it helps me understand what has really happened in the world. How people really live around the world. For example, in the book " Jellicoe Road" there are two families that get into a car crash and both of their parents die. They all become friends and they end up going to the Jellicoe school together. They come up with something called the Territory Wars. And they are between the Cadets, Townies, and the Jellicoe School kids. This is based on a true story that had really happened on the Jellicoe Road in Australia.

I prefer nonfiction because i enjoy ready stuff thats true such as the Titanic. Also when you read something that is fiction, people can get really in to making it up that it begins to not make sense. However, when you read something that is nonfiction it makes things more interesting.

I prefer nonfiction,i prefer nonfiction because, i like real stories.

I also like nonfiction writing because it is very interesting , it has the little sliver of fiction in it but most of it is true . The little sliver of fiction brings the story to a conclusion, but at the same time it catches the readers attention.

example- " The Perfect Storm."

i prefer nonfiction because of how i rather read something that i can related to when i was a kid. nonfiction interested me because i would like to know about someone past like someone i looked up to in the nfl or something like how his life was and if it was a struggle then i know that people have struggle but can move on in life.

I would rather read a non fiction book because they are stories that actually happen, I find them much more interesting. What I think is so interesting is to learn about things that have happened in the past and actually happened to someone. And with fiction books things get a little unrealistic.

nonfiction because its real and it can help you picture the story because its real life unlike fiction.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I prefer non-fiction because I think that it is more interesting to read and learn about how other people live. I also prefer non-fiction because I think that if you read non-fiction books that you can learn more then you can from reading fiction book. I like reading non-fiction books because they are things that really happened in your life and if you read fiction books then you don't really learn anything. Also if you read fiction books there's no series to what you are reading but if you read non-fiction books then you can keep reading on and keep learning more about what happened in the book and what happened in his/her life. You can also picture what you are reading in your mind and you can't always picture what you are reading when you are reading fiction.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I prefer Non Fiction because i feel that non fiction is basically telling the truth and i like a story that tells the truth because i feel that its important to read something that happened then something that didn't happen. When you read fiction they might be telling you a good story but its not as good as a Non Fiction book because most people like to understand whats going on and they would most likely like to hear the truth.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

Todd says that nonfiction is so much better because nonfiction is the truth and he likes read to read about true things. fiction is ok every now and then but he'd rather read nonfiction any day.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

yes i prefer nonfiction stories and movies because of the fact that you are learning things that could help you in real life because you know that it has happened to others and then you learn not to do the things that had done, or you get the kids that like to be stupid and do the bad things that they heard or seen people do and then they get in trouble. but i think it is more interesting because i get to watch some thing that has happened to some one else.

i would rather read about nonfiction. i think if i have to do a project and i need to go on line it would have to b nonfiction to find the info and if it were fiction i would not b able to find info 4 it

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

Nonfiction is more exciting to read because it's things that have happened either present day or in the past. In my point of view these stories let you know more about events. Once you read stories with historic events in them it gives you a little more knowledge on what is happening around you. I do understand that people like fiction because it takes them out of the world for a short period of time, but once there out of that other "world" then their stuck in the normal everyday world that they know nothing about.

Non-fiction is easier to relate to too. Maybe something happened that you didn't know about has happened to you before.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
1 point

I prefer non-fiction because, its about real life. I believe that when stories are real they are more interesting. Sometimes the stories are even sad which makes me more interesting. When i am reading something that is real life it gets me and little more interested in the story. When you read fiction sometimes the story goes to something that doesn't even make sense and that can get really confusing. In non-friction the story most likely always makes sense. So i believe that non-fiction is a little more interested and sometimes makes a little more sense then fiction.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction
1 point

I like nonfiction better than fiction because you get a better understanding of what is going on and what really happened in someone's life or in an event. If you want to research a person or an event in history might get a better point of view in a nonfiction book. In fiction books the plot may be harder to understand or follow if the author over exaggerates what they are talking about.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I prefer non-fiction reading over fiction because i enjoy reading about things that have really happened instead of things that are fake. I would rather be able to read a story and know its true, then have to use my imagination during it. My favorite book series is the "A Child Called I," "The Lost Boy," and "A Man Named Dave."

I prefer fiction stories(made up) because it lets your imagination run wild and I prefer fantasies which are fiction. I have a huge interest in dragons which exist in only fantasies. Fiction stories are more creative because imaginations of a alternate world where unique things or beings come alive in your mind making reading more interesting.

I do not agree with this person because I think that made up stuff is very fake and not something i really enjoy reading.

i prefer this because i think some non-fiction stories are boring because the reading is dry and not interesting and to watch it is a different case because you get to see it and enjoy the suspense other then reading the dull boring story's but on the other hand fiction is better to read and to watch but non-fiction is best to watch.

Side: Yes, I prefer nonfiction

I prefer fiction because it's more exciting than real life. When you read a fiction book, you can use your imagination to travel to places you've never been. A series like Harry Potter, interests me because I'm into the whole magic, mystery, suspense type stories. Also, i think it's fun to read the words that authors come up with, like Doctor Seuss, who totally creates a new point of view on writing. He creates non-existent characters and situations. I think fictional stories help you to express your self, whereas non-fiction; you're living in it everyday.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
1 point

I agree. Non fiction is boring, fiction taps into your imagination

Side: No, I prefer fiction
4 points

I find fiction more "exciting" to read because an author is able to express a fantasy incorporating ideas without the constrain of whether it is true information or false, not implying that non-fiction is uninteresting. In fiction writing, your imagination takes control and gets your mind jogging so you think creative ideas of what happens next because you can never know what happens next(in a fiction).

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

i like fiction more because im tno fantacy thing that can be in those stories and i like how creative they can be and they interest me alot.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

In my argument statement i believe that fiction is more interesting to read than non-fiction. I feel that people like to read the author's creative ideas. You can get lost in the world of fantasy world and not realize it.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

I prefer fiction because it lets your imagination run wild. In fiction, there really is no plot at all. With fiction, you are more involved with the text. You can make predictions and get surprises about what is going to happen next, whereas in nonfiction you basically know what is going to happen next.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

I prefer fiction over non- fiction because fiction lets your mind wander. In fiction writing really can go anywhere, unimaginable things can happen. Non fiction is basically facts about something that has happened in the past or present. It is history which can be interesting, but never really lets your mind think out of the box.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

Fiction, as exciting as it may be, comes with the open sense that what you are reading, is not real. Some Historical Fiction, such as Soldier X, are exciting, but to a point, knowing that its not a true story, dulls the conflict. When reading Nonfiction, especially historical, things can be exciting, but also true, which gives the story a better sense of excitement, danger, and adventure.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
2 points

I agree with you son. Fiction does have the open sense that some information is not real, but it does give a sense of danger and adventure.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

I Prefer Fiction reading much more. When you read it you can have fun and it makes your imagination free. We know that the stories are not true, but who wants to read boring facts when you could be reading about something that excites you?

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

I like fiction better because of the fact that there are no restrictions. In fiction we are not bound by reality and can have anything happen. This is not to say that I don't like non-fiction, but in fiction anything could happen. In a non-fiction story if a person fall of a cliff they are pretty much dead, but in non-fiction a giant flying octopus being ridden bye George Washington could come to save the day as they are being chased by Darth Vader and Godzilla. I must say this option is not likely, but it is more interesting.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
3 points

I prefer fiction due to the fact that it allows you to explore your imagination. It seems like in all non-fiction stories it is all sad, but in fiction you can get into the story and actually wish it was happening to you. Even in the scary or sad fiction stories you can tell yourself that it never happened. Also in the genre fantasy it is called that for a reason. If something is a fantasy something it is something that you enjoy and wish that it could happen to you. It becomes an escape for you from the real world.

Side: No, I prefer fiction

i think none-fiction is boring and fiction has some kind of satisfaction to the stories.

I believe that fiction is much more challenging than non fiction.

Because with nonfiction you have to write down the facts and make it exiting. But with fiction you start with a clean plate and to tell you the truth I think it is fun to see what people come up with . Because with fiction you can really see who the author is and how there mind works which I find fascinating

I prefer fictional stories because I think they are more interesting than Nonfiction because things can happen in fictional stories that could never happen in real life. I would rather read about something that is interesting and fake like Harry Potter than an autobiography of some persons life.

In non-fiction, you follow a story of a real person as they participate in real events. If you are familiar with the events of that time period, you most likely know how the story will end. Even though you may not know the exact premises of that particular story, it is still a bit of a wreck to the ending.

On the other hand, fiction is most likely set in another world that is fantastic and sets the mind aflame with intrigue and awe. You settle into the story, are wrapped up in it, and become embroiled in its plot twists and characters. You feel that you can get closer to the characters also.

Side: No, I prefer fiction
1 point

I prefer fiction because it is not constrained by what has happened. Nonfiction is firmly in the realms of reality. With fiction the story can go anywhere. It can have ludicrous plot twists. Completely unorthodox characters. It can use plot elements that are impossible to us but are absolutely vital to the story at hand. To me the idea of a poet traveling through the 9 circles of Hell is far more interesting than anything that could possibly happen in the real world. I am of course mentioning the Divine Comedy. Not to say that nonfiction cant be exciting. All I'm saying is fiction has the potential to be more exciting.
